Bonnie IEW 09-10
This is Bonnie’s first year of taking a writing class, so her assignments will be very similar to Clyde’s from two years ago.
The first unit her class is tackling is Unit I: which focuses on teaching the kids on HOW to take notes. They call them keywords in class, and they are learning how to choose good keywords from their source texts, and then re-writing their paragraphs from just the keywords. Do you remember taking notes onto index cards in school? This is a MUCH nicer system, and it’s much harder to accidentally plagiarize, too.
For her first written assignment, Bonnie chose a paragraph about Christopher Columbus to summarize and rewrite.
The second assignment was to summarize a book, and Bonnie chose one of her favorites – Anne of Green Gables.
The third assignment was to write a narrative summary. The kids could choose a fable, mythological story, Bible story, etc. as their source text, and Bonnie chose the story about King Midas. We did have to ask her to use the word “donkey” instead of the one from the book.
The fourth assignment, the kids had to take a fable or story, change a few of the details, but maintain the moral of the story in their new tale. Bonnie modeled The Gigantic Mess after the story of the goose with the golden egg.
